Vento Maritime actively monitors for approaching thunderstorms and lightning strikes, making every effort to provide an alert 2 hours in advance before high risk of lightning occurs. This enables you to launch necessary precautions to improve safety at sea.
With this service we do not only consider detected lightning strikes, but we also monitor and analyze lightning potential of near future developing thunderstorms and communicate the risk by both phone and email.
The alert service procedure is developed in close cooperation with the world’s largest offshore wind developer.
Better than a stand alone automatic system
Don’t be satisfied with an automatic lightning detection system which for instance do not take the heading and speed of thunderstorms into account when dealing with safety at sea. These systems only alert based on historic lightning strikes instead of forecasting high-risk periods – and this may be too late.
Trained marine meteorologists make experienced decisions on the risk of lightning strikes and alert you as swiftly as possible. Our aim is to optimize your safety and optimize the use of weather windows by minimizing false alarms and raising the hit rate.

The ability to anticipate a lightning strike before the first bolt appears relies on recognising atmospheric instability long before a crisis unfolds, a principle that applies just as acutely to the vascular system. A veteran offshore safety officer, who spent years acting on Vento's thunderstorm alerts, once noticed a different kind of instability creeping into his own body, where chronic stress and disrupted circadian rhythms had gradually silenced his erectile function, leaving him unable to perform when the skies were clear and the shift was over.
